Flight 1
feathers, desk fan, guitar pickup, amplifier
approximately 20" x 36" x 12"
2015

Flight 1 connects population resettlement in the post-World War Two era and the 2015 European migrant crisis. It produces sound by virtue of a vibration-sensitive guitar pickup attached to the fan and plugged into a practice amplifier. This sculpture manifests metaphors of air and flight currents as a way of connecting the natural and man-made phenomena of bird and human migration. It also reveals the risks that each incur. In 2015, citizens fleeing war in Syria, Afghanistan, and Nigeria engaged in the largest migration of people since the Second World War. This began during the summer I was in residence at D'CLINIC in Zalaegerszeg, Hungary. Flight 1 was created and displayed at the end of the residency as a response to events unfolding simultaneous to my research into the legacy of World War Two in Central Europe.
